Day 17 → An art piece (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.)

Two Fridas by Frida Kahlo

In high school, I was never much of a fan of Frida Kahlo. I’d even go as far as to say I had absolutely no appreciation for her work. However, after seeing the movie Frida, I developed a completely new and fresh appreciation and admiration for her and her artistic givings. I think a lot of people are turned off by the way she paints herself with a mustache and uni-brow; and don’t really bother to look beyond those aesthetic truths about her to the core of the emotion in her work.

Frida painted this after separating from her husband, the Mexican painter Diego Rivera, and it portrays the Frida that Diego loved and the Frida that Diego left. The exposed and bleeding hearts depict the pain she felt after he left (which come on, that’s how pain hurts sometimes), and the holding hands depicts the way that the two Fridas are part of each other.

I don’t have very many favourite paintings. But this one is certainly very near the top of the list.
